The Carrera brand of eyewear has been in production since 1948, when Austrian Wilhelm Anger created the company that would change the technology of eyewear production. Every eyewear design Anger created was based on fulfilling a need that he saw, and the inception of his company did exactly that. He was the first manufacturer of welding eyewear protection.
A sports enthusiast and technology enthusiast, Anger developed an insatiable desire to create a variety of quality eyewear that did more than look good; it actually helped the people who relied on it for protection.
As a result of what he saw at the Carrera Panamericana auto race, Anger developed a material known as “optyl,” in response to the racers’ needs for improved eyewear protection. In creating optyl, Anger developed a flexible plastic that was twenty percent lighter than traditional plastics. Although the product was still “heat-hardened,” it displayed elasticity even though it retained its original shape. Other designers such as Christian Dior recognized the value of flexible and lightweight acetate, and Dior and others also used Anger’s material.
Although the company name was “Optyl” for a few years, it was renamed Carerra in 1974, and has been operating under this well-known brand name ever since.
Meanwhile, Anger retained his intense curiosity in developing advanced eyewear and his love for sports, including auto racing. Carrera has been a sponsor of the America’s Cup, the Winter Olympics of 1988 and Formula 1 racing.
