The iconic Burberry brand has been an integral part of the British fashion industry since 1856.
What started out as a small dress making venture has now become one of the most recognized name in the world of designer wear and accessories.
Burberry started as a small shop in Basingstoke, England run by 21 year old Thomas Burberry. Although a dressmaker, it was Burberry’s innovative designs in functional outerwear that first brought attention to the company. In 1880 they began using the water resistant fabric –gabardine- in their outerwear designs, which resulted in hardwearing yet breathable jackets and coats.
The familiar knight on a horse logo was trademarked in 1901, emblazoned with the Latin word for forward – Prorsum. And from the 1900’s on, the company did indeed move forward.
It was Burberry who outfitted British officers during the first world war, designing the trench coat for the first time. The look took off for civilians, and it is still a popular style for both men and women today. During the ‘20’s they created their signature check pattern, and began lining the iconic coats.
With such a long standing history in the industry, it can only be expected that during some periods, the brand became dated in the minds of the fashion world. This changed in 2006, when a new CEO – Angela Ahrendts – took over the reins and brought Burberry into the 21st century. By removing the check pattern from the vast majority of the line, and focusing on fresh youthful looks, the brand reinstated itself as an important player in British luxury clothing.
Clothing is not Burberry’s only area of expertise. Over the decades they have built a solid reputation for high quality fashion accessories, including sophisticated frames for your glasses. With visionary patterns and designs, Burberry frames are a treat for the eyes.
Always celebrated for their keen eye for details, Burberry can take a classic pillow shaped frame and with a splash of tortoise turn them into an impactful fashion statement. With the use of varying shades of color, your eyes are sporting a visual masterpiece in design and construction.
The iconic check pattern often makes a subtle appearance in Burberry eye wear, gracing the sides of your temples with the perfect amount of flair. You’ll find these in eye catching shades of blues, pinks and understated browns.
Burberry can take you out to play in the sun too, with large lens aviator glasses to create a worldly look. Or tone it down and make an impression with muted red rims banded with blasts of color. Like their prescription eye wear, Burberry sunglasses will still be considered timeless for the next 150 years.
Over 150 years as a trusted brand in fashion holds a tremendous value for consumers around the world. It is Burberry’s commitment to creating lasting styles of high quality that have brought it through an entire century, and will carry it forward well into the next one.
